In the gaming industry, everything is exactly the same: legendary games inspire to create their own kind. Clones are not always successful, even more - most often they do not compare with the original. But there are also exceptions. On which side is our today's guest called Scathe, released thanks to the efforts of the little-known British studio Kwalee.
Scathe was the first serious game for Kwalee. These guys have only two games on their account, one of which is puzzle sudoku. At the same time, the guys managed to emphasize everywhere that the studio was created by the former CEO of Codemasters. It's their time, it's time to take the meat shooter genre to the next level! Or not?
Gameplay
Don't expect a powerful plot from Scathe, so we'll just give you a little insight into what's happening around. We play as Skeyf - it seemed like a great name, but in the game it is always pronounced incomprehensibly, so confusion is guaranteed. Some powerful creator being that looks like one big street lamp orders us to break the balance first, take revenge on all the demons and show our power. As we understand, we are not just a brother of DOOM, it is a twin brother, only with the manners of a gopnik. The voice of the creator will accompany the player throughout the game, threateningly saying meaningless remarks in English, but you practically don’t pay attention to this, because there are more important things to do.
I don't know if you've ever played a game as fast as Scathe. The speed of movement here is twisted to the maximum, at first it’s not even capable of believing in this, much less getting used to it. Our character moves like crazy, shooting everyone around with a huge cannon. As in DOOM, the hero is thrown into large locations and forced to destroy hordes of demons: from crawling to flying. Do not rush to make simple conclusions, because there are more than enough differences between these games.
In DOOM, the motivation to kill demons is always present, because it is simple and logical. In Scathe we seem to serve the dark lord and is just a tool in his hands. Moralfags stepped aside, although in fact it doesn’t make sense whether our hero is good or bad - we are leading to the fact that they don’t explain anything to us and put us in front of a fact that disappoints. After all, there are not many cut-scenes here, and those that are are twitchy and unattractive.
There are very few assassination methods in Scathe. You will be surprised when you hear that our only (for the first time) cannon has infinite ammo. There is no such thing as recoil, so with the left mouse button held down, we can always run. Reminds me of old slot machine games - who would even come up with such an idea in 2022? There are no finishing moves here, so we will not break limbs, crush heads with our feet and tear demons apart with our hands. The only option is to run on shift, destroying everyone. Later we will be given a couple more volyns, but we should not expect a variety of barrels, we will use the initial machine for almost the entire game.
Enemies are stupid cretins who are only meant to run right in front of you and die. They didn’t even come up with realistic animations for anyone, let alone their unsuccessful design. The demons in this game are more like demons on vacation in Hawaii than bloodthirsty opponents who want to kill you. Some are armed with cannons, others only with claw swords. But do not rush to be disappointed, because here there are some of the most crazy and enraging enemies in the entire gaming industry. The first are flying mattress cubes with constant shooting. There are always a lot of them, besides, everyone likes to fly up in your face when he is dying to deal powerful damage. The second is bouncing balls. No kidding. There are always a lot of them and they behave unpredictably. Three of these balls jump in your face and you are dead. And lives for each level give about 10, after that we will start all over again. We didn't forget to add circular cannons, huge demons that practically do not move. The difference between all is small, the main thing is to constantly move.
Locations in Scathe are arranged in such a way that large arenas turn into closed corridors. This is very strange, because on many of them you can cheat by shooting bots from around the corner. The atmosphere is very attractive, as well as good soundtrack. Exploring every corner of the locations is motivated by healing jars, which are always placed as stupidly as possible. You have to jump a lot to heal and die in 30 seconds. You can complete the game in 5 hours.
Graphics
Scathe has good graphics and a good atmosphere, although you shouldn't expect adequate animations, as well as beautiful finishing moves, bright cut-scenes. But this is not the level of 2022. The game turned out to be unsuccessful in many plans and will not even be able to stand close with its inspirer, but there is a co-op here, so you can mess around for an evening or two.
